Following a successful opening round of the 2020 season in August, Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe roars back into action this weekend at the Nürburgring circuit in Germany for round two.
Having kicked off in spectacular fashion under lights at Misano Adriatico last month, a total of 23 cars have been entered for the weekend across the Pro, Pro-Am, Am and Lamborghini Cup classes.
Victories were split over the opening weekend, with overall honours in the first race going the way of Target Racing’s Miloš Pavlović and Raul Guzman, while Bonaldi Motorsport’s Dean Stoneman came out on top in Race 2. Karol Basz and Andrzej Lewandowski were the star performers in the Pro-Am class, battling for overall honours for VS Racing.
Massimo Mantovani (Target Racing) and the Autovitesse partnership of Cedric Leimer and Laurent Jenny split the wins in Am, while Hans Fabri (Imperiale Racing) and Kurt Wagner/Libor Dvoracek (Micanek Motorsport ACCR) shared the LB Cup victories.
Pro and Pro-Am
There is currently just seven points between Pavlovic/Guzman (27) and Stoneman (20) in the point standings so the battle is tipped to be intense from the very first practice session on Friday.
Keen to make inroads into the leading pair in the points is the Leipert Motorsport entry of Sebastian Balthasar and Marcus Påverud (3rd, with 17 points). The German/Norwegian combination was unlucky not to come away with a victory in the opening round at Misano, having started the first race from pole position. Another partnership looking to bounce back from a disappointing season opener is the VS Racing line-up of Olli Kangas and Edoardo Liberati, who could only manage a pair of 10th place finishes after misfortune in each of the weekend’s two races.
With Vito Postiglione and Kikko Galbiati missing this weekend for Imperiale Racing, it is a great opportunity for the GSM Racing duo of Jonathan Cecotto and Patrick Liddy to score big points. They are currently joint fifth in the standings, with the Oregon Team of Dorian Boccolacci and Kevin Gilardoni on 14 points.
Chasing Basz/Lewandowski in the Pro-Am class will be their nearest rivals from Misano. Gerard van der Horst and Loris Spinelli in their #98 Van der Horst Huracán ST Evo. They finished second in both races, while the Oregon Team entry of Damiano Fioravanti and Lorenzo Bontempelli will be a car to watch out for around the ‘Ring.
Stoneman’s chances have been boosted by the arrival of Italian GT driver and Super Trofeo race winner Kikko Galbiati, who joins Bonaldi Motorsport for the Nüburgring weekend.
Am and Lamborghini Cup
In the battle for Am and LB Cup supremacy, the opening round winners will be facing a resurgence from the rest of the field this weekend. In Am, the likes of Yury Wagner, who is joined by local driver Fibel Lieb this weekend, will certainly to make amends for a difficult start to his 2020 campaign for Micanek Motorsport, while Claude-Yves Gosselin and Giuseppe Fascicolo (Boutsen Ginion) will be as equally keen to improve on their Misano fortunes.
Although the Lamborghini Cup is the smallest class with three cars, the action is set to be just as tightly fought as the other classes with overall pace between entries very close indeed. After making his Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe debut last time out, Martin Lechman (Konrad Motorsport) displayed improved speed in the second race of the year compared to the more experienced Hans Fabri (Imperiale Racing) and the Micanek Motorsport duo of Kurt Wagner and Libor Dvoracek.
Around the tight and twisty confines of the Nürburgring, anything can happen.
How the weekend looks
Both races will take place on Saturday 5th, with Race 1 scheduled to start at 12:30. Race 2 is due to start at 18:05 CEST. Both races, which include a mandatory pit-stop, last for 50 minutes and are streamed live on the Squadra Corse YouTube channel and Facebook page.
